Dialectical thinking is holding two things at once that seem to contradict — and finding that both are true. 'I love my mum AND she hurt me.' 'I'm doing my best AND I want to do more.' 'This is hard AND I can bear it.'
The trap of black-and-white thinking is that it makes you pick one truth and reject the other — which usually feels wrong because both are real. Dialectics lets you keep both.
The connecting word is 'and,' not 'but.' 'I love my mum but she hurt me' cancels the first half. 'I love my mum AND she hurt me' holds both.
