Assertive communication is saying what you think, feel, and need — clearly, honestly, and with respect for the other person. It's the middle path between passive (giving up your position) and aggressive (steamrolling theirs).
The core move: 'I' statements. 'I feel X when Y happens. I'd like Z.' It centres your experience rather than accusing theirs — which usually invites conversation instead of defensiveness.
Assertive doesn't mean loud, forceful, or dominant. It means clear and self-respecting. Quiet assertiveness is often the most powerful kind.
