Gaslighting describes behaviour that leads someone to doubt their own memory, perception or sanity. It can be deliberate or simply a habitual defence, and its effect is the same: you begin to trust their version of events more than your own.
Phrases people often recognise
- 'That never happened — you're imagining things'
- 'You're too sensitive / you always overreact'
- 'You're remembering it wrong'
- 'Everyone agrees with me about you'
- 'I never said that, you're making things up again'
Writing down what happened soon after it happens — dates, words, how you felt — can help you hold on to your own account when it is being questioned.
