Where depersonalisation affects the sense of self, derealisation affects the sense of the outside world. Surroundings can feel foggy, dreamlike, distant, or somehow artificial — as though there is a pane of glass between you and everything around you.
This can include
- Familiar places suddenly feeling unfamiliar or 'off'
- Sounds or colours seeming muffled, flat, or distorted
- A sense that other people are behaving like actors, or that nothing is quite real
- Time feeling like it is moving strangely — too fast, too slow, or disjointed
Derealisation can be unsettling, but it is a recognised response and not a sign that something is fundamentally wrong with you. It usually eases as safety and grounding return.
