Exiles

The younger parts carrying what was too much at the time.

  • Card 1

Exiles hold the fear, shame, grief and loneliness that were too much to feel when they happened, so they were kept out of everyday awareness. Protectors exist largely to keep those feelings from flooding you, which is why approaching an exile without a protector's agreement often backfires.

  • Card 2

    You might notice

    • A wave of hurt that feels far bigger than the moment
    • Shame that says something is wrong with you rather than with what happened
    • Fear of being abandoned, or of being truly seen
    • Grief arriving without warning
    • Feeling very small inside an adult life
  • Card 3

Go slowly, and never override a protector. If a part says no, that no is information, not an obstacle — respect it and the trust builds. Deeper unburdening work, especially with exiles and trauma memories, belongs with a trained IFS therapist alongside you. Everything here is for gentle self-knowledge, not for reopening what needs company to hold.
