Self-compassion as a skill

Why being kind to yourself is something you can practise, not just feel.

  • Card 1

Self-compassion is often mistaken for a personality trait — something you either have or don't. In practice it behaves more like a skill: a way of responding to your own pain that can be learned and strengthened over time, even by people who were never shown it.

  • Card 2

    What self-compassion tends to involve

    • Noticing pain without immediately minimising or arguing with it
    • Speaking to yourself the way you might speak to someone you care about
    • Remembering that struggling does not make you weak or broken
    • Allowing comfort in, even briefly, rather than deflecting it

You cannot go back and change how you were treated. You can change how you treat yourself now.
