Fear of abandonment often develops where connection was inconsistent, conditional, or withdrawn as a form of punishment. The nervous system can learn to treat small signs of distance — a delayed reply, a change in tone — as evidence that abandonment is imminent.
You might recognise
- A spike of panic when someone goes quiet
- Difficulty tolerating normal, healthy space in a relationship
- Seeking constant reassurance, which soothes only briefly
- Pre-emptively pulling away so that you leave before you can be left
