What it actually does

  • Turns a swirl of feeling into words, which tends to reduce its intensity slightly.
  • Makes patterns visible over weeks — triggers, times of day, recurring situations.
  • Separates what happened from what you concluded about yourself.
  • Records progress that the mind discounts on difficult days.
  • Gives the parts of you that were never listened to somewhere to be heard.

Writing about the trauma itself: go carefully

Detailed writing about traumatic events can be valuable, and it can also flood the system, especially alone and late at night. If you choose to write about what happened, keep it time-limited, write in the past tense, stop before the distress peaks, and plan what you will do afterwards — a walk, a shower, a call.

If you find you cannot stop once you start, or you feel worse for hours afterwards, that is a sign to do this work with a trauma-trained professional rather than alone.

Prompts that tend to be gentler

  • What did I notice in my body today?
  • What felt slightly easier than it would have a month ago?
  • What was I afraid would happen, and what actually happened?
  • What do I need right now, in one sentence?
  • What would I say to a friend in exactly my situation?

How much is enough

Three lines count. Consistency matters far more than length, and an entry that reads like a shopping list is still an entry. Stop when your body tells you to rather than when the page is full.

On Recovery Trauma™ the Recovery Journal is private to your account, and an optional gentle reflection can be generated after you save — you never have to use it.
