Emotional abuse

Behaviour that wears down how you feel about yourself.

  • Card 1

Emotional abuse describes ongoing behaviour that undermines a person's sense of worth, safety or reality. Because it leaves no visible marks, it is often minimised — by others and by the person experiencing it — even when its effects last for years.

  • Card 2

Behaviours often described as emotional abuse

    • Constant criticism, mockery or 'jokes' at your expense
    • Withdrawal of affection or silent treatment as punishment
    • Blaming you for their moods, choices or behaviour
    • Dismissing your feelings as too sensitive, dramatic or crazy
    • Conditional warmth — care that depends on your compliance
    • Threatening to leave, self-harm or expose you when you disagree
  • Card 3
