Grounding and reorienting

A gentle practice for reconnecting with the present moment.

  • Card 1

Grounding works by gently drawing attention back to the present — your body, your surroundings, this moment — rather than trying to force feelings away. Go at whatever pace feels manageable, and stop at any point if it feels like too much.

  • Card 2

    A simple grounding sequence

    1. 1Notice your feetFeel them pressing into the floor, or your shoes around them.
    2. 2Name five things you can seeSay them silently or out loud, slowly.
    3. 3Name four things you can hearLet yourself really listen for a moment.
    4. 4Name three things you can touchThe texture of your clothes, a chair, the air.
    5. 5Say today's date and where you areOut loud if possible — this helps orient the mind to now.
    6. 6Take one slower breathNo need to control it perfectly, just let it be a little longer.
If grounding doesn't work straight away, that's alright — sometimes it takes several attempts, or a different approach on different days. You might also find our Grounding and Breathing tools useful alongside this.
