How it differs from the other responses

Most people move between all four depending on the situation and what worked before. None of them is a better or worse response.

  • Fight: energy pushes outward — anger, confrontation, defending.
  • Flight: energy pushes away — leaving, avoiding, keeping busy.
  • Freeze: energy is held in — stillness, bracing, going blank.
  • Fawn: safety is sought through appeasing — agreeing, smoothing over, prioritising the other person.

What freeze can feel like

  • Words not arriving, or a voice that will not come out.
  • Heaviness in the limbs, or a sense of being pinned in place.
  • Watching events happen without being able to act.
  • Mind going blank, then remembering what you wanted to say hours later.
  • Tiredness and shakiness afterwards, as the held energy releases.

Why afterwards can be the hardest part

Because freeze overrides intention, people often turn it into self-blame — I should have said something, I should have left. A response chosen by the nervous system in under a second is not a moral failure, and understanding that is often the beginning of the shame easing.

What tends to help

  • Small movement first: wiggling toes, pressing palms together, standing up slowly.
  • Orienting: turning the head, looking around the room, naming what is there.
  • Sound: humming, or speaking a sentence out loud, to reconnect with the voice.
  • Warmth, and allowing shakiness rather than suppressing it.
  • Coming back at your own pace — there is no need to force alertness.
