Why the bond forms

Attachment strengthens when comfort arrives after distress. In a harmful relationship, the person who caused the distress is often the one who provides the relief — an apology, sudden tenderness, a return to how things were at the start. The nervous system links relief to that person, and the link gets stronger each time the cycle repeats.

Unpredictability intensifies it further. When warmth cannot be relied on, attention narrows onto getting it back, which is why people often describe thinking about the relationship constantly even while knowing it is harming them.

What it can look like day to day

  • Defending someone's behaviour to other people while privately being afraid of it.
  • Feeling calm only when they are pleased with you.
  • Missing them intensely after an incident that frightened or hurt you.
  • Leaving and returning several times, each time feeling ashamed about it.
  • Losing touch with friends, interests, or your own opinions.

Why leaving feels so physical

People often describe separation as withdrawal rather than sadness: broken sleep, appetite changes, restlessness, an urge to make contact that is hard to sit with. That is the attachment system reacting to the loss of a source of relief, and it usually eases in waves rather than all at once.

Knowing this in advance tends to help, because the intensity stops being read as proof that the relationship was right.

What tends to help

If you are in danger, or leaving might put you at risk, planning with a specialist service matters more than any exercise. The Crisis Support page lists organisations by country.

  • Writing down what actually happened, so the record survives the pull to minimise it.
  • Naming the pattern with someone safe, rather than carrying it alone.
  • Planning for the hard hours specifically — evenings, anniversaries, after contact.
  • Rebuilding small parts of life that belonged to you before the relationship.
  • Specialist support: domestic abuse services understand this pattern well.
